The Maasai are known to be one of the oldest and culturally rich communities. They are a Nilotic ethnic group that predominantly settled in Kenya and Northern Tanzania. The name Maasai means ‘people who speak Maa’ which is their native language. In this beautiful art piece, the Maasai are having a Eunoto Ceremony, which celebrates the coming of age of a warrior. One of the warriors is blowing the Greater Kudu horn used to summon other warriors to the ceremony. For five days, the Eunoto ceremony features traditional guttural chants, single-file dances on one leg and the Adumu – the famous Maasai jump.
Cattle are sacrificed and their blood drunk by the young men, whose hair is shaved from their heads by their mothers. The Maasai men wear headresses and beaded jewellery which is an art passed on by the Maasai mothers to their daughters.
